OUR ACTIVITIES |
SAVINGS AND CREDIT |
| We introduce saving schemes in all our project villages. The members of the village group should have savings for a period of 12 months and expected to extend credit among members for consumption or productive purposes. As on today we have 85 credit groups functioning in our project area. |
WOMEN DEVELOPMENT |
| The literacy rate of the women population in the district is 48.8 %. We organize women group with the intention to fight for their rights and live with dignity in their own society. Regular sessions are being held in all villages, in educating the women to become a strong and active force. As on today we have 120 women groups in our project area. |
SKILL TRAINING |
| Due to poor economy the children are very uncertain in completing their formal education. We have a skill training section which offers training in Typewriting, Tailoring, Welding and fabrication. We have plans to start computer skills too. Every year we train 25 girls in Tailoring, 30 boys and 30 girls in Typewriting, 10 boys in Welding and 15 boys in metal Fabrication. Since we do not have boarding facilities, we only entertain non-residential course. |
PARENT CHILDREN GROWTH CENTRE |
| We are promoting the concept of community based growth centre in 12 villages. Our aim is to develop a forum in every village and motivate the parents to have greater concern on their children's education and welfare. We run coaching centres in 12 villages where the school drop-outs and children who are weak in studies come every evening for a special coaching. Once a month the parents and teachers assemble to discuss the growth and performance of children. We have strength of 769 students in 12 centres. |
SMALL ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT |
| The organized savings group are finding difficult in extending large credits to members for Income Generation Activities. SAMSSS has made arrangements with funding partners to support these groups with working capitals and this working capital will be revolved between SAMSSS and groups. The members of the group are trained by SAMSSS on small enterprises. Later large credits are extended to individuals or groups to venture on Income Generation Activities other than agriculture. This style of operation is going on in 60 villages and every year around 500 men and women benefit by this small enterprise development. |
CHILD SPONSORSHIP |
| In 10 villages we have identified 50 deserving children who need external assistance for their education. Through this programme we take care of the entire education expenses of the child. There are many children who are still in want of a sponsorship but lack of sponsors, limit us to extend an helping hand to really those who deserve. |
| Through the above activities SAMSSS caters to the population in 140 villages. In addition to this we also extend timely assistance to emergency victims who are affected by flood, cyclone and fire. We are hopeful in continuing our service to more needy villages by the grace of God and by the generous assistance of the Agencies and Benefactors. |

MARINE VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE, RANGANATHAPURAM, TAMIL NADU. |
| The Foundation Stone for the Marine Vocational Training Centre was laid on 26.12.2005, the first anniversary of the Tsunami Killer Waves - at Ranganathapuram in Tamil Nadu, 23 km from Pondicherry, for the benefit of the youths in Tsunami-affected areas. The MVTC started functioning from August 2006. All the required Machinery, Equipments, Sewing Machines, Computers, etc. were installed in time. The subjects being taught are : Carpentry / Catamaran Repairs, Electrical / Cable Wiring / Plumbing for Boys and Computer Operation, Tailoring / Embroidery / Knitting, Making of Agarbathi and Greeting Cards for the Girls.
During the current year, we are having 80 students - 20 each in Carpentry, Electrical / plumbing, Computer and Tailoring / Knitting / Embroidery. Each Course is for ten months. Four Tutors are teaching the above subjects. Besides, outside Resource Persons are being invited for special lectures. |
| We are proud that the MVTC has been recognised by the Tamil Nadu Government on 15.12.2008, initially for a period of three years. This will be a boon for the poor students to get themselves registered in the Employment Exchange as a Government-recognised technical student and thus getting priority in employment opportunities. |
| We have recently started an Eco-Friendly Farming Programme, as an Income Generating Project, in the vast area available in the MVTC complex. The main objective of this programme is to educate students about the indigenous way of agricultural practices and immediate environment as well as impart knowledge about the eco-systems. |
| The following income generating options have been planned, in order to support the economical sustainability of the MVTC : |
- Nurture the existing 350 Coconut Trees infested by Pest and Diseases.
- Planting Black Pepper as a Creeper on the Coconut Trees.
- Install two Vermicompost Units.
- Cultivation of Mushrooms and other Vegetables.
- Cultivation of Fodder crops for the Cows.
