The Chancellor and Archivist

Rev. Fr. A. Melchizedech

About the Priest and Duties:

Every Curia is to have a Chancellor whose principal task is to see to it that the acts (books) of the curia are gathered, arranged and safeguarded. The chancellor may also carry out other tasks that the bishop assigns him. (Canon 482)
The Archdiocesan Archives is the central location for the historical records relating to the Archdiocese of Pondicherry – Cuddalore. These records, which date from the 1840s, include letters, maps, financial materials, photographs, and albums, sacramental records, and artifacts. We are responsible for collecting and preserving the materials, as well as making them available for researchers. The Archives provides data support and clarifications regarding the rich histories of the parishes, organizations and institutions. Apart from the records the archives of the Archdiocese also has a library which houses thousands of valuable books in Latin, French, English and Tamil. The Archives encourages donations of materials, especially personal papers, scrapbooks, or photos, in relation to the histories of the Archdiocese. The materials will be preserved and made available to scholars and other interested researchers. The Archives is open to the researchers by appointment only. The use of some collections requires the prior approval of the Archivist. To have an access to our Archives and the library please call or email the Archivist to request an appointment.
